Boost for Make in India Defence: Indian Navy Commissions First Indigenously Developed Diving Support Vessel INS Nistar

Quick Point:

  • INS Nistar is India’s first indigenous diving support vessel, built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited under the Make in India initiative.
  • 120 MSMEs participated in constructing INS Nistar, which incorporated 80% indigenous content.
  • INS Nistar was commissioned in the presence of Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, in Visakhapatnam.

The Indian Navy commissioned its first indigenous diving support vessel on Friday, 18 July, which can perform complex deep-sea saturation diving and rescue operations — a capability possessed by only a few navies around the world.

The project was launched in 2022 with a budget of INR 2,400 crore for two diving vessels — Nistar and Nipun.

Union Minister Sanjay Seth hailed the commissioning of INS Nistar and praised the Navy and Indian shipbuilding industry for consistently incorporating homegrown technologies into warships.

He further added that the commissioning of INS Nistar will support the role of the Indian Navy as a “First Responder” and “Preferred Security Partner” in the region.

He also expressed confidence in the Indian Armed Forces and their capabilities, affirming that any misadventure on Indian soil will face a strong response.

Chief of Naval Staff Dinesh K. Rathi described INS Nistar as an achievement under the Make in India initiative.
He said INS Nistar will provide significant submarine rescue support to the Indian Navy and India’s regional partners.
Further, he added that this will help India become a “Preferred Submarine Partner” in the region.

INS Nistar is equipped with advanced diving equipment such as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), diving compression chambers, and Self-Propelled Hyperbaric Life Boats.
This advanced vessel can carry out diving and salvage operations up to a depth of 300 meters.

It has a length of 118 meters and a displacement of more than 10,000 tons, significantly boosting the Indian Navy’s strength and capabilities in underwater missions.

The commissioning of INS Nistar highlights the Navy’s commitment to indigenization and self-reliance.
